A man has died in a horror crash outside a Swindon school this afternoon – which saw a car engulfed in flames as pupils witnessed the dramatic scenes.
Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision collision involving two cars in William Morris Way, Tadpole Garden Village, at around 1.05pm today (Monday).
The vehicles – a MG HS and a Hyundai i10 – impacted head-on, leaving the driver of the Hyundai in a life-threatening condition.
The casualty – a man aged in his 80s – was treated by 999 crews in the road after being pulled from his vehicle by members of the public who spotted to help.
Despite the best efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead a short time later. His next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers.
The man’s car caught fire after he was removed from the wreckage, and it had to be extinguished by firefighters.
The driver of the MG – a woman aged in her 30s – was taken to the Great Western Hospital with potentially serious injuries to her pelvis.
The incident happened directly outside Great Western Academy. Pupils were reportedly left shocked after witnessing the initial crash.
Some students even captured the fireball on video, uploading footage to social media as emergency services raced to the serious incident.
A full-scale forensic collision investigation is underway — with the road likely to remain closed until the early hours of tomorrow (Tuesday, 3 June).
Road closures are in place in both directions between Blunsdon Hill and Eastlake.
