A driver has been reported to court after ploughing their car into a 240-year-old cottage.

The building in Bratton near Westbury, which dates back to 1780, suffered significant damage when a Volkswagen Passat became embedded in the living room.

The incident happened on the B3098 at around 11.45pm last Thursday (3 November).

Police attended the scene and reported the driver – a man in his 50s – to court for dangerous driving.

The historic two-bedroom home, named Turnpike Cottage, was under offer by Winkworth Properties – and had a guide price of £335,000.

The house is a key fixture of the community’s history as it dates back to 1780 – and it is the first time it had come to market in twenty years.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire police said: “Wiltshire Police responded to reports of a road traffic collision at 11.45pm last night (03/11) in which a car has left the B3098 and struck a property, causing substantial damage.

“The driver has been reported on suspicion of dangerous driving. There were no reported injuries relating to this incident.”
