A man has been airlifted to hospital after crashing his car into a bridge on a Wiltshire route.
Emergency services were called to a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the B4696 Ashton Road, south of Ashton Keynes, shortly after 8am today (Friday).
Wiltshire 999s understands that a man, aged in his 60s, suffered a medical episode while driving a silver Volkswagen Golf.
As a result, he lost control of the vehicle – which struck a bridge over Derry Brook.
Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance landed at the scene, with critical care medics and local ambulance crews providing urgent treatment.
Three fire crews – from Swindon, Stratton and Cirencester – attended the incident – using “holmatro cutting equipment to release one person from the vehicle”, a Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.
The man was put into the helicopter and flown to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where he remains.
Wiltshire Police has confirmed that the casualty sustained serious, but not life-changing or life-threatening, injuries.
The road was closed in both directions for around five hours, as roads policing officers awaiting to hear from doctors about the man’s condition.
The vehicle was recovered and the closures were removed by around 1pm.
