A man is due to appear in court accused of killing a motorcyclist in a crash near Highworth.

Toby Clay, 20, is charged with causing death by driving without due care and attention on the B4019 at around 11.40am on 2 June last year.

Paul Patterson, 47, was riding his beloved Piaggio scooter when he was hit by a Lexus IS200 on the junction outside The Freke Arms public house, located just south of Hannington.

Despite the efforts of local ambulance crews and two air ambulances, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The defendant, of Skinners Close, Hannington, will appear at Swindon Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (4 May).

Mr Patterson, who worked for Honda, left behind his wife Lorna and his two children Lauryn and Liam.

In a tribute following the tragedy, the family wrote: “Paul was a devoted family man who loved football, cars and of course his Vespa scooter, a passion of his, and his sister Laura, who loved him dearly.

“Paul worked at Honda, Swindon and will be sadly missed by his work family.

“Paul was a kind soul and family was everything. He loved his pets, especially his cat Yoda.

“He was a qualified carpenter and could turn his hand to all sorts. Always a perfectionist, he gave everything in life 100 per cent and loved the motto that ‘hard work beats talent’.

“Paul will be remembered by us as a strong, loving, respectful and honest man who would always protect us.”

His son Liam described his dad as a “strong and kind-hearted man who feared nothing”.

He added: “He’d do anything to protect us and give us the best in life.

“From what he has come from, to what he has given us is unimaginable. I promise to follow in his footsteps and protect my family, just as he would have wanted me too.

“I love you dad.”

His daughter Lauryn said: “I’m going to miss my dad beyond words.

“He was my best friend, and we had such a good bond, he was the most genuine man I ever met and didn’t deserve this to happen to him.

“Life is a fragile thing, and it can change in an instant. I don’t know how life is going to get better but I will always love and honour him.”
