The M4 has been closed in both directions following a lorry fire.

A lorry, transporting a load of hay, caught fire on the Junction 17 (Chippenham) slip road westbound at around 5.30pm today (10 January).

The motorway has been closed in both directions due to poor visibility caused by a thick smoke plume and flames on the road – caused by dropped hay.

No one’s believed to have been injured in the incident.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has five crews in attendance with police and National Highways.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “The M4 is currently closed in both directions between junction 16 and 17 due to a fire involving a lorry carrying hay bales.

“We are supporting colleagues from the fire service at scene and this closure is expected to remain in place for a considerable amount of time.

“Please seek an alternative route.”
