A horse has been killed and its rider injured in a horror crash near the Wiltshire border.

A young woman was reportedly riding the equine – said to be a racehorse – along Maddle Road in Lambourn, near Hungerford, when they were struck by a grey Volkswagen Polo.

The incident, which happened early on Monday (30 September), left the animal with unsurvivable injuries. The rider sustained minor wounds.

It’s understood the horse was impacted from behind, and later put to sleep by a vet.

The driver of the Polo, thought to be an elderly woman, was uninjured and she remained at the scene.

Police are believed to be probing the circumstances that led the the tragic smash.

Thames Valley Police is investigating the road traffic collision, with witnesses asked to call 101 and quote reference number 43240469386.
