A fire engine crashed whilst responding to a serious road traffic collision yesterday (Monday).

Emergency services rushed to reports of a two-vehicle smash on the B3089 in Berwick St Leonard, near Tisbury, shortly before 6pm – as temperatures dropped to below freezing.

En route to the scene, a fire engine – on blue lights and sirens – left the carriageway and reportedly hit a telegraph pole. The firefighters travelling in the appliance were unharmed.

It’s believed the driver lost control of the vehicle on black ice, but thankfully, the crew were able to deal with the collision they were called out to.

A woman was rushed to hospital after a car involved in the original incident overturned onto its side. Wiltshire Air Ambulance was also on the scene to provide critical care.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service area manager Seth Why said that “unfortunately the fire engine left the road” but confirmed that “all our firefighters were uninjured”.

He added: “We continue to remind the public of the dangerous road conditions we are currently experiencing, please avoid making any unnecessary journeys.”
