A motorist has issued a warning to parents in Lyneham after a football flew into the road and hit their car – with the driver only narrowly avoiding a crash.

The incident happened on the busy A3102 adjacent to Melsome Road on Saturday (7 June), where children were said to be playing.

Footage shared online shows a football flying over a fence and through trees before striking the front bumper of a passing car. Watch the video on Facebook >

The driver can be seen braking carefully, with another vehicle close behind them.

According to the anonymous motorist, a collision was only avoided thanks to a split-second decision not to brake harder.

The concerned driver said: ‘Parents on Melsome, please ask your children not to play football so close to the road!

‘Luckily I used my brain and didn’t brake, otherwise this would have caused an RTC as I had a car close behind me!

‘Thankfully the ball didn’t damage my car.

‘Next time might be a different story!’

Residents are being urged to ensure children play safely and away from traffic to prevent similar near-misses.
