A driver who collided with a motorcyclist leaving him with serious injuries before fleeing the scene of the crash has been banned from the roads for two years.

The collision happened in Burcombe Lane, Wilton, in May last year and involved a green BMW being driven by Jacob Giles and a blue Honda motorbike.

Giles collided with the rear of the motorcyclist, causing him to be thrown across the road.

The victim, a man in his 20s, suffered internal and external bruising, as well as a shattered ankle, which requires ongoing treatment.

Giles, 22, of no fixed address, Salisbury, fled the scene immediately after the collision.

Sentencing took place at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court yesterday (09/05).

Giles had previously pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and been found guilty of failing to stop after a road accident following a trial.

He was given a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, an unpaid work requirement, and a two-year driving ban. He was also ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge and costs of £620.

PC Luke Hobbs, from Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Team, said: “This collision had a long-lasting impact on the motorcyclist, who continues to struggle with his mobility almost a year on from the incident.

“Giles was not only driving irresponsibly, but he failed to remain at the scene of the crash to exchange details with the other party and speak to the police when we arrived.

“We hope this sentence acts as a warning to others about the importance of all road users acting in a responsible and safe manner.”
