A wolf as been shot dead after escaping from Cotswold Wildlife Park.

At 11am on Friday, visitors to the Oxfordshire park were told to stay indoors when Ember, a three-year-old Eurasian wolf, was discovered out of her enclosure.

Staff attempted to tranquillise her, but sadly all efforts to capture the animal alive failed.

Ember was then shot by a keeper outside the perimeter fence, near the A361.

A new mum, Ember gave birth to a litter of five cubs earlier this year.

The park’s Managing Director Reggie Heyworth said when keepers realised the animal was not in its enclosure the park’s “emergency plan” was activated immediately.

“As a precaution, all visitors and other staff were notified immediately. Those that were indoors were asked to remain where they were.

“At no time were members of the public in any danger as the wolf was away from the visitor area throughout.”

A full investigation into the incident is underway, according to the BBC.
