Biker ‘swerved to avoid opening van door’ before she was fatally struck, family say

The family of a biker who died on the B390 near Warminster say she ‘swerved to avoid an opening van door’ before losing control of her motorcycle.

The woman, aged in her 50s from Westbury, hit a parked vehicle before falling under a coach and sustaining fatal injuries on Saturday (17 September).

But her family claim she only lost control of her motorcycle because a postal worker had parked at the roadside and opened the van door without checking behind them.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that the claim was being probed, but couldn’t comment in any detail.

A force spokesperson said: “This is a line of enquiry but our investigation is ongoing so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

The B390 from Chitterne towards Shrewton was closed in both directions for several hours so that forensic collision investigation work could be carried out.

In an earlier statement, the force wrote: “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

“We’re appealing to any motorists who witnessed the incident or might have dash cam footage to contact us now.

“You can call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit directly on 01225 694597 or email [email protected] and quote log number 0190 of September 17.”
