A woman was rushed to hospital after reportedly falling from a bridge in Swindon.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and numerous other emergency crews were called to the serious incident on the M4 in the Swindon area shortly before 11pm on Friday (3 March).

It’s understood a woman, aged in her 30s, fell from a road bridge over the motorway close to Junction 16 as police responded to a “welfare concern incident”.

Traffic on the M4 was stopped westbound, with witnesses reporting an array of blue lights in the distance.

Another motorist, who travelled past the scene moments after ambulances arrived, said they saw somebody on a stretcher and the bridge immediately above was closed by police.

South Western Ambulance Service confirmed it sent two double-crewed ambulances, an air ambulance, a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and an ambulance operations officer to the scene.

A spokesperson confirmed that one patient was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, a Major Trauma Centre, for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Wiltshire Police did not confirm the full circumstances, but issued this short statement: “We attended a welfare concern incident on the M4, near to junction 16 at around 10.45pm last night (03/03).

“This involved a woman in her 30s, who is now receiving appropriate care.”
