A casualty has been airlifted to hospital after the M4 was closed for a serious crash.
Emergency services were called to the motorway in the Wickham area, between junctions 14 and 13, at around 5pm this afternoon (Tuesday).
Both carriageways were closed in both directions as Thames Valley Air Ambulance landed, but as of 7pm, the westbound carriageway has reopened.
At least one person was seriously injured, with the helicopter airlifting a casualty to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
The eastbound carriageway is likely to remain closed into the night as investigation work is carried out.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The M4 in Berkshire is closed eastbound between J14 (Hungerford) and J13 (Chieveley/Newbury) due to a serious collision.
“National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene assisting with traffic management.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.”
Diverted traffic is advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol:
- Leave M4 at J14
- Follow the A338 to the A4 roundabout
- Turn left at the roundabout and follow the A4 to the A34 interchange
- At the A34 roundabout use the 2nd exit and follow the A34 to the M4 J13 interchange
- Turn right at the roundabout and rejoin the M4 eastbound
