Dramatic photos show the aftermath of a major van fire near Devizes.

Emergency services were called to reports of a vehicle blaze on the B3098 at Eastcott, near Market Lavington, shortly before 3.30pm on Wednesday (16 July).

According to Wiltshire Police, the van had gas canisters on board and a 100-metre cordon was put in place for the safety of the public.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) confirmed that “one small LPG cylinder” was removed from the van and vented before firefighters left the scene.

However, van owner Linda Lewis claimed there were no gas canisters in the vehicle. “There are no gas canisters onboard the van”, she said.

In a statement at the time, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Please be aware of a cordon in place and road closure due to a van fire outside The Paddock Veterinary Practice on the A3098 at Easterton.

“Colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are currently attending and have placed a 100m cordon around the scene.

“Members of the public are asked to stay away due to the potential risk posed by gas canisters on the vehicle.”

DWFRS said that they sent one crew from Devizes to the incident, with firefighters using “one main line to extinguish” the raging flames.

In an update today (Thursday), Wiltshire Police confirmed that the vehicle was recovered shortly after 9pm.

The road – which was damaged by fire – was handed over to the council for repairs.
