Detectives investigating a serious incident in Swindon town centre on Monday morning say that the victim stabbed himself in the leg with knife he was carrying in pocket.

Investigations in to the incident, where a man received stabbed wounds early on 30 April, in the Dryden Street area, has shown that this was an accidental injury.

It’s believed that an altercation between three men took place in the alleyway off Curtis Street and during it the man’s leg was wounded by a knife he had in his own pocket.

The man, who is in his 30s, is now out of hospital and recovering.

Detective Inspector Helen Jacobs, from Swindon CID, said: “Following further investigative work, I can now reassure people that this wasn’t quite as it first seemed and was an accident and not a random attack.

“I would like to re-iterate our message that anyone carrying a knife in public risks being caught and arrested – facing serious consequences. Also – as we have seen in this case – you risk harming yourself – seriously or even fatally. ”

Two men have been arrested in connection with this incident – both the 42-year-old from London and 32-year-old (address unknown) have been released under investigation.
