A chunky hedgehog has been rescued after getting stuck in drain pipe in Faringdon.

Firefighters attended a property in the town after they were told about the incident on Sunday evening (29 June) – springing into action and devising a plan to bring it to safety.

The animal had become trapped in a four-inch water drain, around one foot down the pipe.

The fire crew spent around 90 minutes working out how to free the hedgehog. They managed to remove it without injury.

The home owner placed it in a box, with the intention of taking it to a rescue centre this morning (Monday).

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were notified this evening of a hedgehog stuck in a drain locally and went to investigate, to try and help.

“The poor little thing had got itself stuck one foot down a four inch water drain pipe.

“It took some serious head scratching and 90 minutes, but we are pleased to say we managed to free it and it now has a comfy box with food and water, ready for the home owner to take it to a hedgehog rescue centre first thing.

“Turns out it wasn’t a poor little thing and was twice the size of the pipe it ventured down!”
