Two air ambulances have landed for a motorbike crash on the A303 in Wiltshire.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the major route near West Knoyle at around 10.30am this morning (Sunday).

The incident involved a car and two motorcycles, according to National Highways.

Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance are both in attendance, landing close to the crash site.

One patient is being airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital for urgent care.

The road is closed in both directions between the B3092 near Mere and the A350 near Chicklade.

It’s likely to remain shut for some hours as 999 crews work at the scene. Further details are unclear at this stage.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Please be advised a section of the A303 is closed in both directions due to a serious road traffic collision.

“Closures are in place between the A350 junction and B3092 turn-off.

“Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes. The road is expected to remain closed for several hours.”

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The A303 in Wiltshire is closed in both directions between the A350 (near Chicklade) and the B3092 (near Mere), due to serious collision which has occurred near West Knoyle involving a car and 2 motorbikes.

“Emergency services including Wiltshire Police are in attendance.”

Eastbound traffic is being diverted via the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the A303 onto the B3081 towards Ivy Cross (Shaftesbury)
  • At Ivy Cross Roundabout, take the exit for the A350 (signposted Warminster, East Knoyle)
  • Travel on the A350 and rejoin the A303 eastbound

Westbound traffic is being diverted via the solid square diversion symbol on road signs:

  • On the A303 take the exit on to the A350 and continue for approx. 7 miles.
  • At Ivy Cross Roundabout in Shaftsbury, exit onto the B3081 and continue for approx. 8 miles.
  • Rejoin at the A303.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are currently dealing with an incident on the A303 near the A350 junction, West Knoyle.

“The road is currently closed, so please avoid the area until further notice.”
