The police and council are ‘working to move on’ a group of travellers who set up camp outside a school in Swindon.

24 caravans and approximately 20 cars and vans parked on a playing field in Eastern Avenue on Thursday evening (12 June), it’s understood.

The incursion is directly outside Lainesmead Primary School, which is open and operating a usual.

Swindon Borough Council confirmed it will be working to move them on.

A spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the group and will be working with Wiltshire Police to ensure they leave the site as soon as possible.”

Wiltshire Police attended the scene this morning — issuing notices to the travellers.

A force spokesman said: “We are working in partnership with Swindon Borough Council to liaise with the travellers and manage their presence at the site.”

Aerial photos of the unlawful encampment show its scale.

Local residents fumed at the group. One said: “As usual, travellers do what they want with no consequences.

“It’s not been long since they left crap – literally – all over the field in Wootton Bassett Road, showing they have little care for the community around them.”

Vehicles at the camp initially blocked the footpath between the play park and Lainesmead Primary School’s perimeter fence, but they’ve since been moved.
