Police have cordoned off a psychiatric hospital after a patient climbed onto the roof.

It’s understood emergency services were first called to the scene at Green Lane Hospital in Devizes in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday).

At 9.30am, around 15 police officers were in attendance alongside an ambulance crew and operational commander.

The hospital grounds have been cordoned off with police tape, as officers guard entrances to the building – which has a secure unit.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that a patient – a man – climbed onto the roof, and negotiations are ongoing in a bid to remove him safely.

A spokesperson added: “Negotiations with the man are ongoing.

“Please be reassured that there is no wider risk to the public.”

It’s not clear if the entire hospital has been closed, but staff are being asked to park in the Devizes Health Centre car park.

According to Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust staff on scene, patients who have appointments at the hospital have been contacted.

A spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently attending an incident at Green Lane Hospital in Devizes. For more information visit the Devizes Police Facebook Page.

“There is no risk to the wider public and people who have scheduled appointments on site are being contacted and any alternative arrangements put in place.

“We are working hard to minimise impact but if you have any queries about your appointment, please contact the team involved in your care.”
