There was a huge 999 response in Wiltshire on Sunday evening (25 May) – as a man entered a river for the second time in 24 hours.

Emergency services were called to the River Avon in Durrington shortly after 7pm – with many fire crews, ambulances and police units deployed.

It’s understood a man, aged in his 30s, entered the water while in distress. According to locals, he has severe mental health issues and is supported by carers.

The same man – who is believed to live nearby – is said to have entered the same stretch of river less than 24 hours earlier, sparking a rescue operation.

Last night, numerous emergency teams worked to locate and rescue the man near Yewtree Close, in what Wiltshire Police described as a “multi-agency response”.

At 8.25pm, charity volunteers with Wiltshire Search and Rescue, Berkshire Search and Rescue and Hampshire Search and Rescue were also mobilised to the incident.

However, they were stood down a short time later as the man was rescued by 999 crews already on scene.

The man was taken to hospital as a precaution, the police confirmed.

The force said that following the previous incident, the man was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has been approached for comment.
