Bristol maternity hospital evacuated as huge fire breaks out

A Bristol maternity hospital has been evacuated after a fire broke out today (Thursday).

Emergency services raced to the scene at St Michael’s Hospital at around 4.30pm.

Pregnant women are being evacuated as flames take hold – with a black smoke plume seen for miles around.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said: “We’re currently responding to a fire in a hospital on Southwell Street, Bristol.

“Firefighters are currently responding to the fire.

“We encourage people to avoid the area while we deal with the incident.”

UPDATE 6.35PM: “We can confirm that the fire has safely been extinguished”, Avon Fire and Rescue said.

Adding: “The cause of the fire will be investigated.”
