A 94-year-old man has flipped his car after rear-ending a vehicle which was slowing down for a 30mph zone in Devizes.

Emergency services raced to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A361 Caen Hill at around 10am this morning (Tuesday).

The incident involved a white Peugeot 2008 and a silver Ford Mondeo on the approach to the turning for Mayenne Place.

It’s understood the 94-year-old male driver of the Peugeot rear-ended the Ford at high speed at the end of the duel carriageway.

The Ford driver was reportedly slowing down for the 30mph zone when the smash occurred.

The impact caused the Peugeot to overturn, and pushed the Ford into the wall. Firefighters were forced to remove the roof to extricate one casualty from the wrecked Ford.

The elderly driver of the Peugeot was taken to hospital, as was the passenger in the Ford, a woman aged in her 20s.

Neither casualty is believed to have sustained any significant, life-changing or life-threatening injuries.

Devizes was gridlocked while 999 crews attended the scene – with the road closed until around 2pm.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers attended a road traffic collision involving two cars on the A361, Caen Hill in Devizes shortly after 10am today (06/05).

“One person had to be freed from their vehicle and was taken to hospital for serious injuries.

“Closures were put in place to allow emergency services to attend the scene. These have now been lifted.”

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 09:59hrs on Tuesday 06 May to a road traffic collision near Devizes.

“We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer, a first responder and a doctor to the scene.

“We conveyed two patients by land ambulances to Royal United Hospital Bath”.
