A Wiltshire pub has shut after its landlady was jailed for the second time this year.

Amanda Gail Hickling had 24 penalty points on her licence when she was pulled over by a traffic officer on the A4361 at Broad Hinton on Friday (21 February).

Checks revealed that the 61-year-old, who runs the The Black Horse in Cherhill, was driving while disqualified – and had already served a four-week prison sentence for the same offence in January.

She was arrested and remanded in police custody. At Swindon Magistrates’ Court the following day (Saturday, 22 February), she pleaded guilty and was jailed for ten weeks.

Further to her time behind bars, she was awarded further points on her licence – taking the total to 36. She was also banned from driving for a further 18 months.

In a post on The Black Horse Facebook page, a pub spokesperson announced: “Hi all, as of tomorrow Sunday 23rd February the pub will be closed until further notice.

“Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

PC Oliver Venton said: “Hickling showed a blatant disregard for the law when she chose to drive her car knowing she had recently gone to prison for the same offence.

“After being pulled over, she insisted that she was taking the driving ban seriously and that she had simply “pushed her luck” to drive to the shop.”
