A Wiltshire road has been closed for two months so toads can cross it safely.

It’s claimed hundreds of the amphibian are killed by vehicles in Smallbrook Road, Warminster, as they migrate to their nearby spawning pond.

The council have brought in a Traffic Regulation Order, which makes it an offence to drive along the route unless it’s to access to property there.

The order is in place between 5pm and 5am from 1 February until 30 April every year – and police will be supporting volunteers in ensuring no motorists use the road illegally.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We’re working with [Wiltshire Council], Warminster Town Council and Civic Centre and Warminster Toad Patrol to bring in a Traffic Regulation Order on Smallbrook Road in Warminster.

“A reminder that the road is closed to motor vehicles (except for access to properties) between 5pm and 5am from 1 February until 30 April each year to allow toads, frogs and newts to migrate safely across the road to their spawning ponds – and the Toad Patrol volunteers to safely help the amphibians across the road.

“The Weymouth Street diversion is down Sambourne Road, NOT through Smallbrook. Please respect the closure during these times.”
