A driver has hit an ambulance after losing a wheel in a pothole in Malmesbury.

Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A429 Crudwell Road, outside the town’s Aldi, at around midday today (Sunday).

The incident involved a South Western Ambulance Service emergency ambulance – which was not responding to a 999 call – and a grey Volkswagen Transporter.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that the Volkswagen collided with a pothole, snapping the steering arm and ripping the wheel off.

As a result, it impacted the ambulance oncoming in the opposite direction – before careering off the road and into a bushy ditch.

Officers on scene estimated the pothole to be around five inches (12 centimetres) deep, and full of water. No drivers will be prosecuted in relation to the crash.

Two fire crews, two ambulances, an ambulance operations officer and numerous police vehicles attended the collision.

The ambulance crew and female driver of the Volkswagen were not injured.

The road remains closed for recovery of the vehicles involved – but is likely to have reopened by 3pm.

Wiltshire Council has been informed of the incident, and are en route.
