50 cows have been rescued from a major barn blaze in rural Wiltshire.

Around 100 tonnes of straw have caught fire near the White Horse at Westbury – just metres from Salisbury Plain Training Area.

The flames started at around midday today (Friday), with six fire engines racing to scene.

A water bowser and an incident command unit were also sent to the incident.

The fire is believed to be contained within a 40×30-metre barn.

Firefighters, including a specialist animal rescue team from Swindon, rescued 50 cows from the building. None required veterinary care.

Crews are expected to remain on scene fighting the flames for the foreseeable future.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12:05pm today with reports of an agricultural fire on near Long River Road, Westbury.

“Three crews were mobilised, from Westbury, Warminster and Trowbridge along with the water carrier from Wilton and on arrival found one barn alight containing livestock and approximately 100 tonnes of straw.

“A further two fire engines were mobilised from Corsham and Frome (Devon & Somerset FRS) along with two support appliances from Devizes. A specialist animal rescue team from Stratton was also requested.

“The fire is being extinguished using hose reel jets and the cattle have been moved to safety.”
