A ‘collision reduction’ firm’s van has crashed into road signs in Chippenham.

Emergency services were called to a single-vehicle road traffic collision in London Road at around 7.30am this morning (Friday).

A Volkswagen Crafter panel van failed to negotiate a priority chicane, hitting the street furniture – including a road sign and a lamppost.

An eyewitness told Wiltshire 999s that the driver, who is not local, ‘did not swerve in an attempt to avoid the crash – just ploughed head on into it’.

The vehicle was Safety Shield-branded, a company which claims it “created a world where AI helps reduce collisions between people and machinery”.

The crash, which happened opposite the turning for Hardens Mead, has partially blocked London Road – with police officers directing traffic past the scene.

A fire crew, ambulance and police vehicle were in attendance but nobody is believed to have been seriously injured in the incident.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We responded to a road traffic collision involving one vehicle on London Road just after 7.30am this morning (13/12).

“The driver suffered minor injuries and the vehicle was recovered by 11am.”

The force confirmed that no action is being taken against the driver of the vehicle involved.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 8.01am today (13 December) to London Road, Chippenham to reports of a one-vehicle road traffic collision involving a lamppost.

“Two crews attended; one from Chippenham and one from Calne.

“There were concerns that the lamppost electrics remained live and so the incident was handed over to SSE to make the area safe. Our stop came in at 10.02am.”
