Firefighters have tackled a major blaze at a house in a Wiltshire village on Halloween.

Emergency services were called to High Street, Codford, following reports of a house fire late on Thursday night (31 October).

It’s understood the building is an 18th Century Grade II listed building – which was for sale. According to locals, the property was empty at the time.

Fire crews from Salisbury, Wilton, Amesbury, and Westbury attended the scene, alongside an Aerial Ladder Platform appliance from Swindon.

The road is currently closed while work is ongoing by 999 crews – but is expected to reopen by around midday.

The fire service has launched a joint investigation with Wiltshire Police in relation to the cause.

In a statement, a DWFRS spokesperson said: “At 10.40pm last night, firefighters from Warminster, Wilton, Westbury, Salisbury and Amesbury were called to reports of a property fire in High Street, Codford.

“When they arrived, firefighters found a house fully involved in fire.

“At the height of this incident, we had seven fire engines, a water carrier and the aerial ladder platform from Yeovil (Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue) on the scene (approximately 35 firefighters).

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels and three main jets to bring the fire under control.

“Firefighters remain at the scene of this incident and are working closely with partners in Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Police and SSE.

“A joint fire investigation with Wiltshire Police has begun.”
