Concern for the welfare of wildlife as women empty two bin bags of bread into lake

"It seems more like fly-tipping than duck feeding" - local resident

THE BIRDS ATTEMPTED TO EAT THE FOOD BUT GAVE UP

There’s concern for the welfare of wildlife at a lake in Swindon town centre after women emptied two bin bags full of pitta breads and tortillas into the water during dusk.

At around 6.20pm on Wednesday evening, three women arrived at the lower lake in Queen’s Park and began to chuck hundreds of bread products into the large pond.

Dozens of ducks, geese and swans flew to their surprise supper and attempted to eat the food, however, it was soon left alone proving too difficult to nibble on.

THE WOMEN WITH TWO BIN BAGS FULL OF BREAD

One local resident, who wanted to stay anonymous but was walking his dog through the park at the time, said: “They come here most nights with two or three bags of bread items.

“I don’t know where it all comes from but my thinking is that it’s left over or gone off product from a local restaurant or takeaway. It seems more like fly-tipping than ducks feeding.

“I’m worried about the ducks. It’s been on the news that it’s bad to feed them bread.”

On overhearing the conversation, another passerby stopped to agree with the comments made.

The Canal and River Trust said that feeding birds bread products regularly or on a large scale could “lead to malnutrition” and “lead to their habitats being damaged”.
