A Warminster woman has admitted killing a couple in a drug-drive crash.

Jessica Higgs pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drugs at Taunton Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday, 7 May).

The 20-year-old was driving a Mercedes Citan van when she ploughed into a Fiat 500 in Camel Hill, near Yeovil, on 15 May last year.

Tony Mist, who was driving the Fiat, and his passenger Thelma Huse, both 69, died.

Following blood tests, Higgs was found to have benzoylecgonine – a derivative of cocaine – in her blood stream.

Her defence barrister accepted that a prison sentence was invertible and Judge Richard Shepherd adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report.

“You have pleaded guilty to very serious offences and the court is only able to deal with your case in one way and that’s prison,” he said.

“But I want to know about your background, I want to know about the impact of any sentence of imprisonment upon you and therefore I am going to order pre-sentence reports.”

Higgs, of Imber Road, Warminster, is due to be sentenced at the same court on 2 August. She was released on unconditional bail.
