A man has died after a huge tree crushed a car during Storm Henk, police have confirmed.

Emergency services raced to save the driver, a man in his 50s, after the freak accident near Cirencester, Glos, on Tuesday (January 2).

Two air ambulance crews, from Midlands Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance, attended the scene – but the man was pronounced dead.

The A433 Tetbury Road was closed as 999 crews responded to the fatal incident close to the junction with the A429 towards Malmesbury.

Two vehicles were involved, a white Kia and an unknown car – which was trapped underneath the tree.

A forensic collision investigation got underway at around 5pm last night, with work ongoing to remove the vehicles and the tree this morning (January 3).

In a statement, Gloucestershire Police said: “A man died after a tree fell on the car he was driving on Tetbury Road near Kemble yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 2 January.

“Police were called at around 3.15pm with reports of a large fallen tree on the A433 Tetbury Road near the junction with the A429.

“Emergency services, including an air ambulance, attended the location which is between Tetbury and Cirencester.

“Despite the efforts of those at the scene a man aged in his 50s and from the Bath area died. His next of kin and the coroner have been informed.

“The road remains closed as recovery and investigation work continues and motorists are asked to find alternative routes.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police is asked to provide information online by completing this form and quoting incident 276 of 2 January.
