New College evacuated over ‘suspicious package’ as police swoop on site

New College has been evacuated due to a suspicious package, it has been confirmed.

There’s a significant police presence at the North Star site this afternoon (Thursday) – and it’s understood the bomb squad are en route to the incident.

North Star Avenue and Polaris Way have been closed to motorists.

Hundreds of students can be seen standing in the heavy rain as police attend the scene.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police confirmed that they are dealing with “reports of a suspicious package”.

Adding: “Officers are on the scene and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.”

New College Swindon posted on social media: “Following an alarm at our North Star campus, we are currently evacuating all buildings as a precaution.”


UPDATE 2.10PM: “Police officers have examined the suspect package and it was found not to be a cause for concern”, a spokesperson for the force said in an update.

Adding: “Precautionary checks are still taking place but there is not thought to be any ongoing threat.”
