A firearm probe has sparked the strimming of bushes at a Wiltshire nature reserve.

Armed police arrested a man and woman during a raid at an address in Rosemary Way, Melksham, at around 5pm on Monday (4 September).

It’s not clear what caused the response, but the pair – aged in their 20s – were held in custody on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Despite the blazing sunshine, police are carrying out searches of Primrose Nature Rescue – which is directly behind the property of those arrested for allegedly having a gun.

A section of Clackers Brook cordoned off on Tuesday (5 September), but it appears specialist search officers are focused on combing the field too.

Unfortunately, the area is cover in patches of brambles or bushes – which are being removed by officers armed with petrol-powered strimmers.

Local residents have continued to use the reserve to walk their dogs, though at times have been stopped or redirected due to the ongoing work.

Whilst nothing has been confirmed, it’s believed police are looking for a discarded weapon. It’s not yet known how long police will remain at the scene.

“Officers attended an address in Rosemary Way, Melksham, at approximately 5pm yesterday and arrested two people – a man and woman both in their 20s on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police told Wiltshire 999s yesterday.

Adding: “Enquiries are currently ongoing.”

Today, the force confirmed that both suspects have been released on bail.
