Users of laughing gas could face a spell in prison when the drug becomes illegal later this year.

The UK Government has announced that possession of nitrous oxide, also known as NOS, will be classified as a Class C drug before 2023 is up.

Those found to have the drug on them face up to two years in prison and an unlimited fine, with up to 14 years custody for supply or production.

It’s been illegal to supply the drug for use since 2016, but possession is currently lawful.

In a statement, Suella Braverman said: “The British people are fed up with yobs abusing drugs in public spaces and leaving behind a disgraceful mess for others to clean up.

“Earlier this year the prime minister and I promised a zero-tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour and that is what we are delivering.

“If you are caught using ‘laughing gas’ as a drug, you could be hit with a hefty fine or face jail time.”

In January this year, a man was arrested in Royal Wootton Bassett after police found 130 nitrous oxide canisters – and illicit pills – at his address.
