A wounded man who was hit by a motorhome has been airlifted to hospital after waiting nearly two hours for an emergency ambulance.

The serious road traffic collision happened in Gassons Road, near Cuthwine Place, in Lechlade, shortly after 12pm this afternoon (Sunday).

Several police officers and an off-duty nurse provided first aid to the casualty, who reportedly sustained significant leg injuries including open fractures.

But at 1.30pm – one and a half hours after the initial 999 call – there was still no sign of an ambulance.

It wasn’t until about 1.45pm that an ambulance arrived, swiftly followed by Midlands Air Ambulance.

Paramedics and the critical care team provided urgent treatment to the man in the road until around 2.30pm – when he was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for treatment.

Locals claim the driver of the Cheyenne motorhome was reversing out of a garden when they struck the man and dragged him along the road for a short distance.

Gloucestershire Constabulary has been approached for comment.
