A Chippenham man’s been sent to prison after he called a police officer a homophobic slur.

On Wednesday (23 August), Swindon Magistrates’ Court heard that Ewan Parrott was arrested outside the homeless hostel Unity House after being evicted on 19 April this year.

When police arrived on scene at around 8.45pm, they found the 24-year-old unsteady on his feet, drinking from a can and shouting abuse.

He called officers “w**kers” and “piggy c**ts” before he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in a public place, prosecutor Pauline Lambert said.

He was taken to Gablecross custody for processing, but it was there where Parrott called PC Georgie Dodd a “f**king rug muncher” and a “lezza”.

Parrott pleaded guilty to a homophobically-aggravated Section 4A Public Order Act offence, a charge of bring drunk and disorderly and additionally, the possession of ketamine in Wood Lane on 17 August.

The defendant was given a community order in November 2022 for a racially-aggrevated incident. Michelle James, a probation officer, told the court that he had made “very little progress”.

She added: “I would suggest that Mr Parrott doesn’t have any intention of complying”.

Emma Hillier, defending, said her client “simply doesn’t remember saying any of these words” but “offers his apologies to that police officer”.

She said that he had “no intention to offend” PC Dodd but “accepts it would have caused her some alarm and distress”.

Ms Hillier confirmed that Parrott has been living on the streets of Chippenham and suffers with alcohol withdrawal seizures.

Citing his lack of engagement with the probation service and the new offending, magistrates sentenced him to a 10-week prison term. He must also pay a £154 surcharge.
