The reason for the crime scene in Penhill can be revealed exclusively by Wiltshire 999s.

Police have remained tight-lipped about a serious incident which sparked a significant cordon being put in place on Saturday morning (19 August).

Inglesham Road, Newton Way and Semley Walk were closed to the public as specialist officers and dog units were called in to carry out in-depth searches of the area.

People living in the area said they were ‘shocked and scared’ by the cordons and the fact they had to be escorted back to their homes.

Wiltshire Police, at the time, said it would be “inappropriate to comment” on the investigation – which in turn sparked speculation and rumours.

Now Wiltshire 999s can reveal that an incident involving a firearm prompted the major response.

On Saturday morning, a member of the public contacted the police to report that a man threatened to shoot a woman whilst armed a gun on Friday (18 August).

When an officer visited the alleged victim, she was found to have sustained some minor injuries. However, she did not wish to formally engage with police.

A man was arrested on suspicion of various violent offences in connection with the incident and has since been bailed with conditions not to enter Swindon and not to contact the alleged victim.

It’s understood officers cordoned off areas close to where the firearms incident allegedly took place in hope a thorough search would turn up a discarded weapon.

The crime scene was lifted on Sunday evening (20 August) after more than 24 hours. It’s not known if anything of interest was located.

An investigation, led by Swindon CID, is ongoing.
