A Swindon woman who was ‘arrested for murder’ has escaped an assault conviction.

The 23-year-old, who cannot be named due to the ongoing investigation, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday) charged with assaulting an emergency worker.

The defendant admitted kicking PC Cook on 22 July 2023, when she was intoxicated and suffering a mental health episode. Police had been called to the incident by worried members of the public.

The court was told that the women – who was arrested on suspicion of murdering her child in December and remains on bail – lashed out as she was “dragged” by male officers.

Solicitor Luke Jameson said “she’s got a lot on her plate”.

Crown prosecutor Patrick Schneider agreed that, due to the circumstances of the case, the offence could be dealt with by a police-issued caution rather than a criminal conviction.

“It’s a sad and difficult situation that you are in, you are going to get a caution for this”, District Judge Joanna Dickens told the woman.

She will have to attend Gablecross Police Station to receive the caution at a later date and the investigation into the suspicious death of her child continues…
