A ‘distressed’ woman was rescued from the River Avon by specialist firefighters.

The ambulance service was called to a mental health-related emergency in Cranebridge Road, Salisbury, in the early hours of Sunday morning (18 June).

During the incident, the woman involved entered the water – sparking a call for assistance from local police and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS).

Two fire engines and a specially-trained water rescue team were sent to the scene. The operation to remove the woman from the river took approximately one hour.

The patient was taken to Salisbury District Hospital for treatment.

DWFRS confirmed that crews from Salisbury and Amesbury along with a water rescue team from Salisbury attended the incident at around 4.10am.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said officers were called to the scene “following reports that a woman had jumped into the river in a distressed manner”.

Adding: “The woman was rescued and taken to Salisbury District Hospital.”
