The M4 has fully reopened following a serious lorry fire near Chippenham.

Four fire crews from various stations across Wiltshire and Somerset were called to the scene eastbound between junction 17 and junction 18 at around 10am this morning.

A fire services spokesperson said: “Two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire. The trailer unit was detached and not involved but unfortunately the tractor unit was destroyed by fire.

“Crews remained on scene to make the area safe. Highways [England] were also in attendance.”

The road reopened at around 11am, but is expected to be partially closed again within the next couple of hours for recovery of the lorry.
