A mum with a drink problem bit her daughter in an attack at a Chippenham pub.

Police officers rushed to The Kingfisher in Hungerdown Lane at around 5.30pm on 7 June last year following reports of a disorder breaking out.

40-year-old Kelsa Powell was arrested and today (Thursday) at Swindon Magistrates’ Court pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Patrick Snider, prosecuting, said the defendant was intoxicated with her four children – of which two were aged 8 and 12 and the others adults – when the incident happened.

One of Powell’s adult daughters attempted to stop her drinking more alcohol and that resulted in a verbal argument. She then proceeded to bite her daughter’s arm, causing it to bleed.

Liz Highams, defending, said her client had stopped taking her medication for mental health issues before her trip out to The Kingfisher – which resulted in her becoming aggressive.

She said Powell suffered from anxiety and depression from a young age, which got worse when she had her first child at the age of 19.

Ms Highams told the court that the defendant is currently working with Turning Point and The Nelson’s Trust to deal with other alcohol problems.

The woman, of Booth Mead, Chippenham, was handed a 12-month community order with the requirement to complete 30 rehabilitation activity days.

She was also fined £120 and told to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £95 surcharge.
