Two air ambulances were scrambled after a military lorry overturned in Wiltshire.

Emergency services, including six fire crews, were called to the road traffic collision on the A350 south of Warminster at around 11pm last night (Thursday 23 March).

A flatbed military lorry overturned in a single-vehicle crash at Higher Pertwood, trapping a soldier inside the cab with serious injuries. Another occupant managed to escape the wreckage.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance were scrambled to provide emergency care, landing in a field close to Pertwood Manor Farm.

Firefighters worked to extricate the wounded soldier, a man aged in his 20s, before he was rushed to Salisbury District Hospital for treatment; his injuries aren’t said to be life-threatening.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that six appliances – from Tisbury, Mere, Warminster and Yeovil, Somerset – were sent to the incident.

One of two passengers was out of the vehicle on arrival of our crews and the other passenger was extricated by firefighters”, a spokesperson said.

Adding: “Casualty care was administered until the arrival of the ambulance service and a fuel leak was also dealt with.”

At the height of the incident, two air ambulances, an ambulance, an ambulance officer, several police vehicles and seven fire-service vehicles were in attendance.

The road, between Crockerton and the A303, was closed for several hours for investigation work and recovery – but it had reopened by 6am.
