A man has died in hospital after being hit by a lorry in Royal Wootton Bassett.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on the A3102 High Street at around 12.35pm yesterday (Wednesday 22 February).

A yellow Wiltshire Concrete lorry was involved in a collision with a pedestrian – a man aged in his 60s.

Great Western Air Ambulance landed near the scene as its critical care team treated the casualty alongside local ambulance crews. A team from Wiltshire Air Ambulance also attended the scene in a car.

Despite medics’ best efforts at the roadside and in hospital, the man died of his injuries this morning (Thursday). His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Following the crash, the High Street was closed in both directions for more than four hours. Roads policing officers and serious collision investigators were present at the incident.

Officials seized digital evidence from the lorry involved, though no blame should be attributed to the driver at this early stage – as an investigation into what happened is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Our thoughts are with [the family] at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected.

“If you saw what happened please contact us on 101 quoting reference number 54230019785.”
