A man wielding an axe stole around £4,000 from a shop in Swindon yesterday evening.

A large number of police officers – some with tasers and police dogs – were at the scene of the serious robbery at The Co-operative Food store on Groundwell Road at just after 7pm.

An unknown offender is said to have threatened a member of staff with an axe, before making off with approximately £4,000 of cash from the safe, according to a source.

Shortly after the incident, which left staff ‘extremely shaken’, the store was closed for the rest of the evening; meat products could be seen strew across the floor of the shop.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called at around 7.15pm yesterday (Wednesday 28 December 2017) to a robbery at the Co-op on Groundwell Road, Swindon.

“An unknown offender had threatened a member of staff and made off with an amount of cash.

“No-one was injured, although the member of staff was extremely shaken.

“We are currently investigating and are appealing for witnesses – if you heard or saw anything suspicious in the area around this time please call police on 101.”

The Midcounties Co-operative told Wiltshire 999s that they are providing support to their colleagues involved, and helping the police with their investigation.
