An elderly pedestrian was killed in a crash in Amesbury yesterday evening (Sunday 12 February).

Emergency services were called to the road traffic collision on the A345 Countess Road at around 7.30pm.

A silver Vauxhall Astra struck the local man, aged in his 80s, and he sustained significant injuries.

The casualty was rushed to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital, but later died.

The road was closed in both directions until the early hours of this morning (Monday), with forensic collision investigation work undertaken overnight.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who may have dash cam footage.

“If you can help, please call the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 and quote reference number 54230015911.

“Alternatively, email the team directly via [email protected].”

Expert road traffic accident solicitor Tom Hartigan, from Novum Law’s Salisbury team, said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this dreadful time. A sudden and tragic loss like this is utterly devastating.

“This was a particularly nasty crash and while we don’t yet know what caused the accident, we know the police will conduct a thorough investigation into what happened.

“It is devastating being told that your loved one or close friend has died in a road traffic accident.

“Compensation will never replace your loss, and it’s probably the last thing on your mind, but if it comes to light that the accident was caused by someone else’s mistakes, it can help with the financial impact, enabling you to cope with day to day life and ensuring you have all the support you need.”
