A man’s died after being struck by a BMW on a major route near Chippenham.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A4 at around 6pm yesterday evening (Tuesday 7 February).

A silver BMW estate hit a pedestrian, a man in his 80s, in the vicinity of a traffic island on New Road, near the crossroads for Studley and Derry Hill.

Despite the best efforts of medics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene at around 7pm. Wiltshire Air Ambulance was dispatched but the crew were stood down on their arrival overhead.

The silver BMW involved in the collision remained at the scene
Forensic collision investigation work took place overnight

The main road was closed in both directions for forensic collision investigation work, followed by vehicle recovery, for around 11 hours – until approximately 5am today (Wednesday).

In a statement, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Emergency services were called to the road near Studley at around 6.45pm following a report that a car was involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

“The pedestrian, a man in his 80s, sadly died at the scene. His next of kin has been informed and will be supported by a specialist officer. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“We’d like to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to get in touch if they have not already spoken to police.

“We would ask any witnesses or anyone who may have dash cam which could assist our enquiries to contact Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 228 of 07/02. Alternatively, you can contact the team direct on [email protected]”

Emergency services at the scene shortly after the fatal collision

Expert road traffic accident solicitor Claire Sagala, from specialist personal injury law firm Novum Law based in Swindon, said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this dreadful time.

“A sudden and tragic loss like this is utterly devastating. This was a particularly nasty crash and while we don’t yet know what caused the accident, we know the police will conduct a thorough investigation into what happened.

“It is devastating being told that your loved one or close friend has died in a road traffic accident. Compensation will never replace your loss, and it’s probably the last thing on your mind, but if it comes to light that the accident was caused by someone else’s mistakes, it can help with the financial impact, enabling you to cope with day to day life and ensuring you have all the support you need.”
