A missing 65-year-old man was found by police as he drove through Wiltshire drunk.

Graham Dean Morgan was stopped after driving his BMW X3 on the A36 between Warminster and Salisbury shortly before 6pm on Sunday 4 December last year.

Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court today (Friday) heard that the defendant was sought by police due to him being reported as missing to Hampshire Constabulary.

On speaking to the driver, PC Pankhurst was greeted with a strong smell of alcohol and spotted a half-full bottle of gin in the driver’s door.

A roadside breath test was carried out and following a positive result, Morgan – from of Bay Road in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight – was arrested and taken to Melksham custody.

Prosecutor Liz Miller said he’d blown a reading of 126 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on the evidential breathalyser, making him more than 3.5 times over the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Morgan, who represented himself in proceedings, said he had nothing to add and described the National Probation Service’s pre-sentence report as “accurate”.

Magistrates handed him a 30-month driving ban and a 12-month community order with 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge.
