Wiltshire Police say they aim to ‘reduce the impact of the game on the local community as much as possible’ during the Swindon Town and Luton Town match on Boxing Day.
The force is asking the supporters attending the match, on 26 December, to support the police and both clubs in making public safety a priority before, during, and after the event.
National Rail has announced there will be no trains running on Boxing Day, which police officers believe my increase the amount of traffic passing through the town, and severe disruption is expected.
Important information issued by Wiltshire Police ahead of the game:
– There will be no Great Western Railway services in operation on Boxing Day so please plan your journey in advance and allow plenty of time for travel as the town is likely to be busy with pedestrians and motorists heading to the Boxing Day sales
– Parking for home supporters is available at the County Ground and Drove Primary School, Drove Road, SN1 3AH
– Parking for away supporters is available at St Joseph’s Catholic College, Ocotal Way, SN3 3LR, or Spring Gardens car park, SN1 2BF
– The fixture is a 3pm kick-off and supporters are encouraged to get to their seats as early as possible due to a near sell-out crowd expected.
– Try to minimise what you carry – fewer bag searches speed up stadium entry.
Superintendent Adrian Burt, Match Commander, said: “We are working closely with our partner agencies, including Swindon and Luton Football Clubs, to ensure Boxing Day’s game goes ahead with minimal disruption and that it is a safe and enjoyable experience for all. We hope to reduce the impact of the game on the local community as much as possible.
“We are expecting a larger than average number of supporters, both home and away, on the day. Because of this, the public may well notice an increase in police officers at the ground before, during and after the match as we aim to keep everyone safe.
“As is normal practice, officers will be wearing Body Worn Video (BWV) during the event which will help in assisting any investigations that may be carried out, should we experience any trouble on the day.
“It is important to note that National Rail has announced there will be no trains running on Boxing Day which will no doubt affect a lot of people’s travel plans – please be aware of this and plan your journey well in advance so you don’t miss out.
“Most importantly, we want everyone to enjoy themselves – please support us in ensuring this is a safe event and one that all ages can enjoy.”
