Emergency services mounted a water rescue operation near Marlborough today (Sunday).

Specially-trained firefighters from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a car plunging into icy water in Great Bedwyn at around 11am.

On arrival, they kitted up and entered the Kennet and Avon Canal on a boat – in an urgent bid to rescue anyone who may have been stuck in the vehicle.

One of three firefighters entered the freezing water to access the car and ensure it was clear of people. Thankfully, nobody was located.

Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedics, who are trained to treat patients in dangerous environments, were also sent to the scene – responding through the Wiltshire countryside from their Bristol base.

A local ambulance crew and Wiltshire Police were also in attendance.

It’s not yet clear how the vehicle came to be in the canal or how long it’s estimated to have been there.
