A Swindon school pupil has been rushed to hospital after a ‘metal pole became embedded in them’.

The serious medical emergency sparked a huge response to St Joseph’s Catholic College – including Wiltshire Air Ambulance and multiple Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) units.

Local ambulance crews, a fire engine and police were also in attendance from 1pm today (Wednesday).

Wiltshire Air Ambulance landed on the school field to provide aid to the patient, who was later taken to Great Western Hospital for further treatment.

It’s believed the child was jumping on a table when one flipped and a table leg pierced through their body.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 12:40 today to assist the ambulance service with an incident at St Joseph’s College.

“One appliance from Swindon attended and left just after 2pm.”

In a short statement following the incident, a Wiltshire Police spokesperson said officers were providing an “additional police presence to ensure public order”.

It was followed by a second statement – it read: “Members of the public may have noticed the presence of emergency services this afternoon (30/11) at St Joseph’s Catholic College in Ocotal Way, Swindon.

“We were in attendance to support colleagues who were responding to a medical incident at the school. A pupil has been taken to hospital where they are receiving appropriate care.”
